Microsuction Earwax Removal: What to Expect
What usually happens before, during and after a microsuction earwax removal appointment, including assessment, suitability checks and aftercare.
Microsuction is a commonly used method of earwax removal. It involves using controlled suction to remove wax from the ear canal where it is appropriate to do so.
A good appointment should not start with the assumption that wax removal will definitely be carried out. It should start with assessment.
Before treatment
Your practitioner should discuss your symptoms, relevant medical history and any factors that may affect suitability.
This may include questions about:
- ear pain
- discharge from the ear
- recent ear infection
- previous ear surgery
- perforated eardrum history
- dizziness or balance symptoms
- use of hearing aids or earplugs
Your ears should then be examined to check whether wax is present and whether removal appears suitable.
During microsuction
If microsuction is appropriate, the practitioner will use specialist equipment to view the ear canal and remove wax carefully.
You may hear suction noise during the procedure. Some patients also feel mild pulling or movement as wax is removed. The appointment should be explained clearly, and you should be able to ask questions before treatment proceeds.
Treatment should be stopped or adapted if there is a reason it is no longer suitable.
After treatment
Aftercare advice should be given following the appointment. This may include guidance on what to do if symptoms continue, when to seek further help, and how to reduce the chance of future wax build-up where appropriate.
It is important to understand that earwax removal may not resolve symptoms if wax was not the cause. If symptoms remain, further assessment or referral may be needed.
How to prepare for an appointment
You may be advised to soften the wax before your appointment, depending on your circumstances and the booking guidance provided. Do not insert cotton buds, hair grips or other objects into the ear canal.
If you have pain, discharge, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness or concerning symptoms, earwax removal may not be the right first step. You should seek appropriate medical advice.
